Aloha from the driver-powered Honolulu launch team! I'm one of the six Lyft Mentors surprised with a free trip to Hawaii to help bring the 'stache to the island of O’ahu. It was an adventure that gave new meaning to the idea of bringing people together through transportation – even across an ocean.
My flight was the last to arrive, and I stood outside the airport holding the cuddlestache, waiting for a fellow Mentor sent to pick me up. The next thing I knew, a car horn was honking, people were shouting my name, and Whitney Houston’s "I Will Always Love You" was blasting. Four of the other Mentors were piled in the car, too!
It felt like my best friends were picking me up for a visit — best friends I'd only just met. They greeted me with fistbumps and a handmade 'stache lei, marking the beginning of our 72-hour Hawaiian adventure.
We spent the next day and a half meeting potential new drivers, and feeling pretty blown away not only by the physical beauty of the island but the beauty of this newly forming ridesharing community. Lyft is connecting locals with each other, and creating ties that bond people nationwide.
Being a Mentor in a newly launching city is one of the best experiences. I've loved the opportunity to instill my sense of community from Lyft Denver to new drivers, and it's incredibly humbling to think that the six of us were trusted to represent the sense of true community that Lyft provides for the people of O’ahu.
That's what being a Mentor is about – not just assisting with the logistics of onboarding new drivers, which is key, but really ensuring new drivers understand how important community is for Lyft.
Our experience on the island of O’ahu is not one that we will ever forget. The Hawaiian people are in for an incredible experience now that Lyft is available to them, and we're honored to play a small role in that.
Mahalo nui loa to my fellow jet-setting Mentors: Ashley, Henry, Phetsamay, Ryan, and Daniel!
