When Dustin Robinson slides out of Driver Mode, he heads to the recording studio. Check out this Orange County driver’s first album, Proper Introduction, and hear how Lyft makes his music career possible.
When did you know you wanted to be a recording artist?
I’ve loved to sing ever since I was a child. I used to jam out to Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder from my Sony Walkman all the time. I think I drove my parents nuts, but they've always been supportive of my music.
Where can we hear your music?
My band and I just released our first EP. You can check it out on iTunes, Google Music, or Spotify. You can also stream it or buy it from dustinrobinson.bandcamp.com
Who are some of your musical inspirations?
I love all the classic R&B/Soul music. I grew up listening to (and copying the style of) Stevie Wonder, Sly & the Family Stone, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, and James Brown. I'm also influenced by some of the newer artists out there like Allen Stone, Marc Broussard, Sam Smith, Musiq Soulchild, Anthony Hamilton, Bernhoft, James Blake, and Justin Timberlake.
What’s been the high point of your musical career so far?
I've performed with a ton of incredible people throughout my life. I feel like every time I get on stage is a new high point in my career. Every day there's something new to be grateful for, and I'm just so thankful that I have a gift I can share with people. That's what this whole thing is all about — making people feel something, and believe in something bigger than themselves.
How did you hear about Lyft, and why did you start driving?
I heard about Lyft through an ad that my friend Lindsie posted on Facebook. I had never heard of anything like it, so I knew I had to give it a shot! I became one of Orange County's founding drivers, and now you can find me giving rides and doing promos in the Long Beach area.
How would you describe your style of music?
It's hard for me to say because my influences are so vast, but if I had to give you a fusion of genres, I'd say it's classy, soulful, high-energy, pop-funk. According to all the major retailers, it's considered "Pop."
How has Lyft helped you pursue your goals?
Lyft gave me a chance to meet a ton of new people, and gave me a real way to make some extra income. I'm heavy on promotion, and I love to drive, so having different options to make money was a huge plus for me with Lyft. I also went with Lyft last year to SXSW in Austin, TX and had the best time! I got to do a few impromptu shows, and even met Justin Beebs! I know…
How do you balance recording with driving on the platform?
Since you can work any time, Lyft has been great to fill in the gaps when I'm not as busy playing music or in the studio.
What do you hope do with your singing career?
Change the world, make people smile, make people dance, make people cry, and make people want to take action instead of just talking about their goals. I want to inspire people to dream much bigger than they ever have because, "If you aim at nothing, you'll hit it every time." I don't want to be nothing. I'm aiming for greatness.
