Chicago’s own Love Lyft, James Slack, stars on the Steve Harvey Show this week, with his ‘Love Journal’ in the spotlight. Read on for his firsthand account of the experience:
I joined the Chicago Lyft community in June 2014. The sense of community sparked my interest, and the earnings easily replaced my past job at Nestlé. Driving gave me the time and income needed to pursue my photography business.
Lyft Creatives were theming their cars and gaining notoriety nationwide. I decided to join the Creatives as Love Lyft, and the ‘Love Journal’ was born. It was a simple concept: Each passenger would write their definition of love in the book, and could muse over the other entries.
One day, a producer for the Steve Harvey Show hopped in my car as a passenger. Michaela contributed her definition of love to the Love Journal, and we parted ways after the ride.
About a month later, a production assistant from the show messaged me on Facebook. They’d been searching for me for weeks, and wanted me to come on the show in just a few days. Steve Harvey himself wanted to interview Love Lyft during his month of love-themed shows.
On the show, I explained how being a Lyft driver inspired me to start the Love Journal. Steve featured my car and three journal entries. It was a great experience — I might even gain a book deal out of it!
Love Lyft has been far more successful than I could’ve ever dreamed. What started as an effort to foster positive vibes in my car has grown into much more. Lyft is an awesome platform to meet some of the coolest people ever, like I have.
