Detroit became the newest pin on our map little more than a week ago, and I was among one of three Mentors from Indianapo-lyft to have the privilege of welcoming the founding drivers with a healthy dose of Midwestern hospitality. Ashley, Alec, and I tied on our ’staches that morning for the 300-mile trip, arriving just in time to help set up Motor City's first driver meetup. By 5:30, the room was filled with an impressive assortment of locals: chefs, musicians, grad students, artists, a carriage driver, a veteran in his 80s, even a resident doctor — all looking to help rebuild Detroit from the community up.
Here's Matt from the Lyft Launch Team introducing a few of our newest family members:
Over a few slices from Supino Pizzeria, we shared stories of our own adventures behind the wheel. I told them about Lyfting through the polar vortex in full snow gear, the sheer joy of my #firstLyft, and taking the drummer for Collective Soul to the airport one wintry afternoon.
My favorite part of the hangout was the gift exchange with our Motor City brethren. They put together adorable Detroit-themed swag bags for each of us, and we showered them — err, not literally — with Indy racing cupcakes. I also came bearing a special gift of my own: my trusty mustachioed snow shovels, Shove-On and John Snow. No polar vortex will be too much for my Detroit brethren!
After the hangout, we saddled up and paraded our ’staches through downtown Detroit, attracting smiles, honks, stares, and our fair share of double-takes. From there drivers dispersed for their first night sharing the ride!
The next day brought us together for another social at a local hotspot, this time to share our best Lyft stories over sliders, lobster mac-and-cheese, and truffle fries. And then it was time for us traveling Mentors to bid Detroit farewell and journey back to the motherland — Indy riders need us, after all.
Lyft on, Motor City! You're in great hands.
