Our friends at Intuit did much more than provide tax help this year. The masterminds behind QuickBooks Self-Employed also hosted a sweepstakes for Lyft drivers who shared their favorite tax deduction online — and today, we have a winner.
Andrew’s coming up on his one-year Lyftiversary in Austin. After being named a finalist, we invited him to meet his local General Manager in person, along with a few of of our partners at Intuit. The kicker? We surprised him with the grand prize: a larger-than-life $8,000 check.
Read on to see how the news unfolded.
Why did you originally start driving with Lyft?
I figured that meeting people and getting out of the house would be a good thing. It ended up being a really good thing. I’ve met some amazing people, including a few new friends. It’s been great for extra money on the weekends, but to be honest, the extra cash is a perk at this point.
Your favorite tax deduction is Grandma’s Cookies. What’s that all about?
Well, I actually bought some for myself to keep in my center console. My next passenger had been drinking and mentioned that he was hungry. (I drive on the weekends, so I get a lot of passengers who are out having fun.) When I offered him one, he was like, “Oh my god. Are you serious?!” I mean, gum is always great, but the cookies were next level. They were such a hit that I always keep them on hand.
What was your reaction when you found out you’re a sweepstakes finalist?
I actually found out on my birthday, so I was like, “Check it out! Happy Birthday to me!” I’ve never really won anything. This prize would let me get a few repairs on my car — you know, new tires and such — and more importantly, more cookies.
Well, Andrew, we have news for you. You’re our winner!
Oh my god, thank you! Eight thousand dollars?! That’s a lot of Grandma’s Cookies. That’s a ridiculous amount of Grandma’s Cookies! And that is a BIG check!
