Oh, hello future driver

We’re really, really thrilled to have you join the Lyft community. To help you get started as an approved driver, we’ve broken down the ins and outs — from navigating the app and getting paid, to practice rides and getting five stars. Feel free to save this page to your browser or phone to reference as needed.

It’s a lot of information — we get it. But if there’s one part you read in this entire guide, make sure it’s these four things:

Be yourself … seriously
Drive only your approved car and use only your driver account. Not only do passengers know to look for the car associated with your Lyft account, but your car has passed the inspection that’s required by Lyft — and often city and state regulators. Unapproved vehicles may not be covered by Lyft’s insurance policy.

Hands-free is best
Using a phone mount allows you to keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Please don’t text and drive — it’s distracting and can be dangerous.

Free up every seat
While we’d all love to bring our buddies, please don’t bring friends or family along when giving rides. Most regulators require anyone transporting passengers to pass a background check. You may also have all seats full on any given ride.

Service animals
Lyft’s policy and the law require all drivers to accept service animals regardless of allergies, fear, or religious or cultural objections. Service animals are almost always dogs and not required to wear tags. Passengers are also not required to prove their dog is a service animal. Learn more
